This is also know as PDD.

Although some experts , such as Bernard Rimland Ph.D and others think this label  should be abandoned as it is too confusing and disliked. In short this is just another type of autism. And that is understandable as people whom are diagnosed with PDD are excluded from programs and services designed for those with autism.

Others would argue that that PPD is a wide spectrum of social and communication disorders including autism that are hard to disgnose.

So how can you tell if your child has PDD.

Well experts can agree that diagnosis is avaliable by the age of three. Symptons, (again for want of a better word) include

  • Communication problems
  • Diffuculty relating to people, objects and events
  • Unusual play with toys and other objects.
  • Difficulty in adapting to changes in routine and enviroments
  • Repetative body movements or behaviour patterns.
  • Trouble relating to others
  • lack of curiousity about their enviroments.

Children with PDD , just like Dyspraxia vary widely in abilities, intelegance and behaviour. Some may not speak, others will however what is evident is repetative play, limited ranges of intrest and impair social skills.

What causes PDD

In short your guess is as good as the experts. The exact cause is unknown however there is a number of theories

  • Many scientists believe that they stem from biological and neurological problems in the brain
  • Others think it is genetics
  • Some studies suggest that PDD is caused by a wide range of causes that may seem unrelated, including food Allergies , yeast in the digestive tract and exposure to enviromental toxins.

Treatments and diagnosis.

First off all the bad news, there is , to date no cure for PDD. There is a number of treatments and therapies, including medications to ease symptoms of PPD. Some children benifit from small classes and one to one work, however other groups believe that children with PDD should mix with those without PDD.

Diagnosis is made by a pofessional experianced in evaluation of children with Developmental Disorders. This could be anyone from a psycologist to a pedriatrition.

The condition is disgnosed based on a history of the childs development observations of the child and behaviour checklists.
